Department History:
Computer science courses were first introduced at Keene State College through the Mathematics department in the late 1970's. The first course was Apple Basic on an Apple II machine taught by Mathematics professor, Ron Tourgee. In the early 1980's, a second course - Apple Pascal - was added. Increased student interest in these courses, and computer science in general, convinced the College's administration to hire two additional faculty members (Jerry Joyce and John Pollard) in 1986. They worked with Dr. Tourgee to draft a proposal for a CS degree. The CS degree was first officially listed in the 1987-1988 Keene State College Catalog. The first class of 10 CS majors graduated in 1988.

The early CS curriculum included a Pascal course sequence, followed by an alternate language requirement (usually COBOL or FORTRAN). Upper level courses such as Data Structures, Systems Analysis, Decision Support, Advanced Programming, and Database Management, rounded out the program.
From 1993 to 2001, the CS program grew from fewer than 50 majors to over 140 majors. This growth can be attributed to more wide-spread CS program recognition and increased nation-wide interest in the field of computer science. The number of majors has since leveled off and the department has averaged approximately 100 majors since that time. The department has graduated an average of 40 majors per year for the last 10 years.
Today, our program is thriving. As Keene State College approaches its Centennial in 2009, the College and the CS department are focused on completing the transition from 3 to 4 credit hour courses and the reshaping of the General Education program. Through these initiatives Computer Science has been given an opportunity to review and strengthen its curriculum and to adjust its program goals and objectives. Once those tasks have been completed, the final products will be made available through the department's web site.
Mission Statement:
The Department of Computer Science, in support of the mission of Keene State College, pursues two broad objectives:
- To prepare students who will be equipped to perform satisfactorily in the competitive, dynamic CS/IT industry, and/or pursue graduate study in CS/IT or any related field.
- To provide professional advice and direction to the college on matters relating to CS/IT.
Four Credit Transition:
Below are two documents for incoming freshmen and currently enrolled students containing important information about the four credit transition the college is undertaking.
CIO Night:
Keene State College's UPE president setup a night for students to meet with local CIO's to talk about what it means to be in IT today.
